(supplied by Stephan Knappe)Power Windows
Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II SRL40821 US spec
As I bought this car, I found some of the power windows inoperative.
The power locks were not working
from the driver's side too.
I found that the wires runnig from the door to and through the
A-post were broken where they are bent when
the door is opened and closed.
The wiring loom has multiple plugs in the footwell, it is necessary
to temove the carpeted panel in the footwell
to gain access. After unplugging, they can be pushed through the
sidewall.
The guiding of the cables is mounted to the door with three screws.
They are difficult to reach, but it is possible
with some effort without removing the door from the body. The
outside screw is reachable from the outside
when the door is opened, it's a good idea to cover the edges of the
paintwork with protective tape to avoid
scratches. After all three screws are removed, it is possible to
pull the wires carefully through the aperture
in the A-post.
It is helpful to remove the door panel first, the wiring loom can be
unhooked from it's fasteners
and stretched a little bit. This will give more room and
accessibility to the broken wires.
I replaced the broken wires with a length of new cable, thus the
bending part is new.
The new cables were soldered to the old ones, the joints covered
with shrinking hose which gives a
professional appearance.
Reassembly is straightforward.
Another cause for problems are the window switches itself. Each
switch contains two microswitches, one for up-
and one for down operation. These microswitches are available
seperately and can be renewed.
They are easily checked with the help of an ohm-meter.
Each of them has three poles, one is 'common', the other two are
connected to this common one in
either pushed/non pushed state of the switch.
For testing the switch the cables must be disconnected first. The
cables are attached to the switch
by tiny screws which are easily lost. Have a little cup ot the like
handy to collect the small parts.
Slow window winders may be caused by bad/missing ground
connection of the motor, I found
worn out cables and connectors also.
Don't forget to remove the negative pole of the battery prior to working on the electrical system.
General note:
The procedures written above are from my personal experience
repairing / maintaining my own cars.
I cannot guarantee that these procedures are correct for every car
of the Silver Shadow model range,
which have been modified during the production years and for various
worldwide markets.
